My Criteria to Seeing a Movie in Theatres...

As the title suggests, I have a criteria to what movies I will see in the theatres, unless they are independents. I see who is acting in the film, watch interviews with the main roles and director after establishing if it's worth seeing, the main plot line, and also after capturing a few glimpses of the movie in their trailer or scenes; one can tell if the film is going to be great. The three points are terrific actors you know that can do the part justice, fantastic story to flow with the actors, and when watching those bits and pieces of the film see if the cinematography is up to par. Those are my criteria, if you want to know. Sometimes the stars and planets aline to make those amazing, fantastic, jaw-dropping films/movies that you decide to see. In my mind, I'm spending money on something I could be saving for to watch a movie that in a few months, I very well could rent it for half the price. There is only one movie right now I want to see in the theatre's (the other one I just saw), Milk. It was weird, flipping the remote at 11:15ish on Christmas night, and Brad Pitt and David Fincher being interviewed by the one and only, Charlie Rose. Even though they talked about the movie without giving too much away, I had to see it after watching these fantastic interviews. Some questions I've read in the Rolling Stone interview, but Charlie is able to "dig" and go deeper. That's what happened when seeing Sean Penn and Gus Van Sant being asked thought-out questions. So far this idea has worked for me, the last time other than tonight when I saw "Curious Case of Benjamin Button"--Fantastic!!, definitely saw why it is nominated for Oscars, was when I saw "The Dark Knight"-the best superhero movie ever, but I like the villain. I am picky about what movies I will take the time and see in theatres, now you know the reasons...feel free to use them yourself.

Fight Club

Fight Club is a definitive and amazing film. With an amazing, incredibly talented cast is definitely worth seeing. I decided to watch it after hearing from a wide range of people that this movie is fantastic, a must-see. I have recently heard so many references to it-- even on Food Network! On Good Eats, Alton Brown makes a reference to the lye solution while making something. I had to see this, I feel like I missed something special by not seeing it. Let me tell you, you have. It may see seem like a movie about fighting, but don't let that fool you. I am not going to tell you what it is about, you are going to have to figure that out by yourself. I was told that the more times you watch it, the better you understand and see connections. I've only seen it once, but all through the night I was trying to tie up loose ends. But, I also can't wait to read the book (by Chuck Palahniuk) and watch the film again. The movie will be engrained in you for a long time. They make references to things in your everyday life. Makes you think. Awesome movie...and I still don't know what it all means...

Gone Baby Gone

I've been wanting to watch this film for a while now... I'm so impressed. This film was directed by Ben Affleck, with his younger brother Casey as the male lead. I read the back of the DVD box and had to see it. The story is in Boston, where the Afflecks grew up..**hint, hint. A story of a missing little girl is being shown through a neighborhood by the small town detectives working on the case. The story is extensive, confusing, but keeps you watching. The movie is meant to shake things up, and surely has in my life. On one subject that we hear about to often has hit a strong chord with me. During many points of the movie, I was shouting at the characters to do something, or how their behavior was effecting me in the story. I love those type of movies, leave an effect and while watching you get emotionally involved. I was ready to cry at a few vital parts of this film. The acting is amazing, also with direction. The cast and crew use many techniques to create the feel of this moving picture. I have seen a few of Ben's movies and films and in my opinion, Ben please keep directing! Great job!

I have a question for you. What movies do you remember??? This movie I will remember, because of all the great film qualities it had, and how they effected me and hopefully affect people who have watched it. The films you remember normally hit you like a train coming at you. It changed my perspective and makes me think. Brought a coming-of-age tale to the country through a popular media. Smart. If you choose to see it, or to read the novel "Gone Baby Gone" is based on it will effect you. Don't dismiss it, or ignore it. The central issue of this film is a serious, and very real one. This movie is worth watching.

Milk actors and director on Charlie Rose

Last night I was watching Charlie Rose, and it was terrific. It had the various actors and filmmakers being interviewed about the new film "Milk" being out. Charlie always acts really intelligent questions, and therefore makes the conversation an intelligent one. It's a nice surprise while flipping through at midnight. Sean Penn is one of the great actors of our time, I personally have only have seen one movie of his, I am Sam. Terrific. A must-see! Josh Brolin is also in this film, who has been doing great in his films this year. Milk is a story of the first openly gay official in San Fransico in '78. The acting is superb, I only saw a few scenes on Charlie's show, but I was into the movie the whole time. While James Franco (playing Milk's boyfriend) was flirting with Harvey you can't help but smile. Its so real, you believe them. This movie is supposed to be fantastic, and I'm so excited to see it. I hardly ever see movies in the theatre, but the movies that have great actors and terrific story is definitly worth seeing. I dont mind paying as much as it would to buy the DVD in several months. I saw "The Dark Knight" and that lived up to the hype. Milk is about a man who stood up for gay rights, and human rights to free will. All-star cast in this film, which is always worth watching. It's a coming of age tale from '78. Wierd how things like that happen. The issues they had then are coming back in a new generation. I honestly think this movie is coming out at great time. (No pun intended) Our world is ready for change, no doubt about it. This movie is in limited areas, wish it was everywhere then maybe more people will see it. Who knows?? You never know. I haven't seen it, but I can't wait. I love these type of movies, ones that start stirring up the business. Well, I hope you may see it. If you have no desire to see it, I hope you may find somewhere in you to see it. Open your mind to new ideas. Liberating...

The Future is Unwritten...

I just watched this amazing documentary of Joe Strummer. The movie was so terrific, even to somebody who does not even love the band liked the movie. I love his idealism, protesting rebellious songs. It shows the true spirit of Joe throughout his career. As you have probably read, I have read Joe Strummer and the Legend of The Clash by Kris Needs. It's like having the book being seen in front of you. Amazing. After watching for the second time in a week, I decided that when I eventually have the time, I will write a letter to Mick thanking him and also the band for their great inspiration they have bestowed upon me. I am forever grateful. In this film, Julien talks to Joe and The Clash's inspirations, friends, media, fans and reveals to us more dimensions of Joe. One gets a feeling of being there to know the guys of this wonderful, revolutionary band. "The Future is Unwritten" also explores the time that the music was performed, from CBCG's to Shea Stadium. The times were crazy, and diversified. As it shows in the music. Ever think abou it? Almost every music you listen reflects with the culture and the times that were happening. You don't even have to be from the decade or era or movement to understand that. The film also captures the spirit of the Westway, with The Clash's belief of what being a "Punk" was all about, and also what the ethos of British Punk is. The conversations, the laughs, the music being played, the memories being recalled around the campfire is a moving and emotional experience. We will miss you Joe!!! Amazing film capturing that unique spirit that will live forever...

27 Dresses

Wow, I know everyone has heard the phrase "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." That pertains to anyone of just about any age, think about it. Well the story is wonderfully done as Katherine Higel uses her comedic edge to make this movie a great success. It is a "chick flick", but guys can also enjoy it. It reminds us that maybe our dreams may be opposite of what we thought about all those years. Amazing, this movie may change your opinion about something that is so normal in our everyday lives. A whole new perspective that you never could have thought about yourself. That's one reason I love movies...one idea can change the way you think entirely. See something, watch something that one simple word and definition is changed forever. I love that.

Culture = Art.

As I was reading in an information about an Art College, the art history section seemed interesting and very true to what I think. The articles we find today were relics and art of ancient societies and peoples and the way they thought, lived their lives, and how the cities are run. Cultures are an interesting subject, and they therefore invoke travel. I want to see the world, not just a part of the world for a week looking at all the touristy sites. I would like to get to know the people, rich or not. Their opinions, likes/dislikes, what is endorsed by their society, and the way they pass time. Think outside of the box. My basic philosophy on a lot of things. Don't be afraid to be the only one standing, who knows maybe someone might realize a different perspective or idea is the way to go instead. Some places I want to travel are just for the experience. Why not go? Of course, there is some places that attract me more, but I'm not going to not go somewhere because someone says a place is dirty- it's part of its charm. The places I want to go may be the entirely different area of the city. I desperately want to see the world, get out of the small town, get my ideas out there. I hope that everyone does! Don't keep it quiet, after all we do have the freedom of speech, and now is the time to say your opinion. In the 60's and 70's seemed like a time where people actually protested whatever they didn't believe in. I support that. Peace has become a trend; to me, its a way of life. haha, It sounded like a slogan. Peace is a symbol representing no wars, loving and respecting everyone, no matter who they are. You'd be surprised if everyone understood (notice not agree) with the idea maybe our world would become a greater place. Without less hatred and murders? Now come on, who in this world would think that is a bad thing? History is repeating itself, and our culture should see that. Times have changed, and ideas are becoming more clear. Pacifism is a strong movement and political philsophy should be brought up again to see who does not support hurting innocent people for merely something that doesn't involve them. We should not just wear the symbol, know what it stands for. Some people wear the symbol and mean it, I hope you do.

CDs or music downloads?

I been a little mad lately when the subject of online downloading has come up. Personally, I don't believe in it. I like to give respect to the artist by actually owning the CD, actually have the graphics and footnotes in the cover. It doesn't matter what the price is-- I love my music. If I have to pay extra so what? It means a lot to me. If that means having less Cd's oh well. The music industry isn't doing as well because of this new way of doing things. I saw an interview with one of the Rolling Stones musicians who doesn't like when his children download music, buy the CD, give the artist credit. Not the company that you are buying it from. I get excited when I get a new CD and listen to it for about a month straight. I would think if you are passionate about music, you'd be excited...or is that just me? Vocalize your love of it. After all it is a way you express yourself. Own up to your passion. I take pride in my collection, and know information to back it up. I read about my favorite musicians, they are some of the coolest people in my mind. Bob Dylan for example, I have read his autobiography and loved it. He is truly himself and has an opinion about everything. I respect him so much more-he didn't want to be a star; he just wanted to put his music out there. He didn't consider himself a "voice of a generation". He just merely wrote what he wrote. Take it or leave it. I just recently finished Joe Strummer and the legend of The Clash, it was amazing, hearing the stories from someone who knew them all so well. Hear background stories, what critics thought. Kris Needs gives a great perspective from his excitement being at one of the first Clash gigs, to the pain of hearing of Joe's death. He also has a music journalism background and describes the songs with awesome references. He knows Joe, Mick, Topper, and Paul. It's not some outsider looking in, its a insider giving an insider point of view. Great book for any Clash fan. I like that I can go to my CD rack, grab a CD and show it off to people. Literally, have the graphics on the CD, not the plain CDs and enjoy listenin to it whenever I feel the need or impulse. I love talking about music, my opinion about artists, songs. The music I listen to isn't normally played on the radio much, either because the artist doesn't want their music super-exposed or its not exactly mainstream. I don't care, I can always give someone a recommendation about a new band to check out. It's up to them if they do. I don't have the top 40 on my mp3 player that's for sure. Music is art, well it should be. There are definitely artists in the business. In it to express themselves, not for the money. Some music needs to be loud, some quiet, some needs an open window.... whatever you listen to, take pride and be excited about your music.

Coffee & Cigarettes

This movie I heard of because I'm a huge Tom Waits fan, as you already know. The movie is subtly hilarious, and the movie is a watch and listen type of movie. I've probably seen the movie 3 times in a few days. It's like nothing I've ever seen before, Jim Jarmusch does a terrific job with a super cool cast. I'm excited to see the other movies I've heard of. Awesome, completely different perspective and makes you really want coffee. Just a warning. I highly suggest 'Coffee and Cigarettes'. Terrific movie.

A Tribute to James Dean

Yes, I know I've written about him plenty of times. But he never ceases to amaze me with his acting and his life. I dream and will go to Fairmount, where he grew up. In one quote he stated "If a man can bridge the gap between life and death ... I mean, if he can live on after his death, then maybe he was a great man." He surely did that. Fans see him in the movies. He took acting seriously, as a form of art. Where the director tells him what he wants to get out of the scene and leave the actor to do their work. He also loved art, music, and sensing how people behave. He is still referenced in music, movies, everything. Our world is still fascinated by him. He was inspiration for some of rock's greatest bands and artists. I'm reading a book about The Clash and when they were in New York they stayed in the Iroquois hotel and were excited because James Dean stayed there. Pretty cool, one of my favorite bands liked one of my favorite actors. He in a way is immortal through his acting, fans from the era and not keep his spirit alive. He truly has become a real legend. It's sad to think of what he could have done in the movie industry. I do ponder that sometimes, what would he have done? His spirit still lives on, and always will. His fans won't let him die. His death was a tragedy. I don't know if the world was ready to see him die. He is a legend. Always will be. He changed acting for eternity. There are very few actors that can do that, and Jimmy achieved that. Wow.

Acting is harder than one may think...

Acting is so much harder than one might think. In order to act, one must act like another person executing their behavior and emotions and making it believable and interpret what the character needs to say so the audience know that they are really playing the character. It's much harder than you think. The great actors are able to interpret their lives and look to find life experiences that may help them earn a role later in their career. Acting is to some actors' an art form. Expressing yourself by acting of a whole new person. Method acting is one form that Marlon Brando used, I've seen extras of 'Streetcar Named Desire' where he is trying the 'Stella!!!' scene with different emotions expressed. Marlon Brando is one of the most famous method actors, who did it flawlessly. Acting takes work, being able to extract emotions from their lives, concentration on the character (to do it well) to make their role terrific. I think we should give actors more credit...for their acting. After all, that is their job. In the end it doesn't matter what the tabloids say, it's about their work. Plain and simple. They will be remembered for their work. On day I was looking for an actor's group on a website, and there was no group appreciating his acting. Sad. Actors should be recognized for their work. Think about acting and give a little more credit to the actors.

Rolling Stone magazine

I just bought myself a copy of the August edition of "Rolling Stone". It was awesome, they speak my language. They hit every genre!!! I personally love everything. It is a magazine I dream of working at if I go into journalism. You get paid for talking to the biggest bands, or the classic legends and hanging out with them. And then other people get to see your opinions, how awesome is that? I love the music they put in the magazine. The descriptions are pretty clear to what the music really is. They make references to albums and artists that I know of. Gotta love that! They get to go to shows, experience and get to know the artists' throughout each of their careers. Pure awesome. They hit every genre-indie, heavy metal, pop, rap, soul and R&B, rock. They listen to everything. I love that because they aren't afraid of one type of music. Everyone shouldn't, it's a way people express themselves. In my mind, music is something that is universal. You can argue with your best friend or a stranger about which artist is better or genre or whatever. You can't live in a world without music. Music is not a material thing. It can't burn in a fire. We can remember the lyrics and sing them or hum a tune. It will never die. I know I won't let it. Music is a passion of mine, even though I can't really play an instrument- I dream of being able. I love music, it's the best thing.

Definitly, Maybe

Well, yes. No. Definitly, maybe. A terrific movie. Called one of best romantic comedies since Annie Hall by an London journalist. The story is ever-changing. You never know who is going to show up. There are some similarities between the two movies- here are a few--set in New York, filmed in New York. A love story including a few crazy women. I was yelling at the television with surprise as the film preceded. Laughing with anticipation of what is going to happen next. I'm dying to see it again. There are 3 women in Will Haye's life, and as he is telling the story to his little daughter, Maya (Breslin) Will figures out what he needs in life. Abigail is so talented at 12 years of age. I've seen her in No Reservations and was amazed. Can't wait to see what she'll be doing as an adult. Ryan Reynold's performance is stellar as his character goes through his journey of his love life since out of college. He uses his comedy background to make Will a far more interesting character. This story goes by about 10-15 years and makes it more complete as you watch. I was worried that the movie would be short and not complete the full story, let it leave up to your imagination. Let me say, that's not a bad place to be, but you are wanting to see how the story unfolds. I saw the trailer, and knew I'd love it. The comedy in it was my sense of humor, and the sense of humor I admire. Hope you see it, it's a good guy or girl movie. Even though, it is a kind of a girl movie. Well, enjoy your movies whatever they may be.

21

I recently saw this movie. I've been on a recent lure to new releases, and they have not let me down. The story is very well done and well-formed. Jim Sturgess always seems to impress. Heck, that's one reason I wanted to see it, because he's so talented. If you like Vegas movies, you will love this movie. Mainly a young cast, but with classic actors mixed in makes an awesome reportare. There are a few characters that the new roles they take on that I'd never expect to play the roles they did. Unpredictablility. It kept your attention. Awesome movie. So far in the past week I have not really seen a bad movie. Cool, huh? Well, I hope this short blog suffices.

Annie Hall

Annie Hall is one of my favorite movies. I only have a top 3, the rest I can't decide. It's hilarious, genius. I was majorly in the mood to watch it when I was in a not-so-cheery mood. Annie makes me laugh, with so many memorable scenes and lines. Woody Allen is smart, witty, sarcastic in this film. Another reason I love it is because you have to understand the references to watch it. In case you don't know what the references are you are still laughing, but understanding them helps out a ton. Annie Hall is a movie I frequently talk about, not because of it's outstanding humor and storyline; I talk about it because it's insane characters relate to real life and Alfie's reality is similar to the rest of the world. Every scene is special. A must-see. It is a 70's movie no doubt about that. So funny, it changed my wife.

Tom Waits--Wow.

He is amazing!! I just listened to his concert on NPR where he did an awesome, epic concert where he played songs he has never done outside the studio. Unfortunately, I don't know which songs those where. I found at least 8-10 new songs that I adore. I've only started listening to him at the beginning of the month, and now look forward to every time I have the chance to listen to his musical genius and the legendary raspy, jazzy voice. I knew about 5 songs in the whole set; about 7 more I have heard of. Hearing his music and stories makes his music even mean so much more to me. He is compared to Bob Dylan a lot, yes, sometimes they are similar but yet two completely different. I've tried finding similar artists' to Tom. Can't find any. That's pretty cool. The only comparison I have to say when I talk about him to friends is that he is jazz/blues/rock/folk. Really cool guy. His voice has a cool Louis Armstrong thing going on. During the concert he told ironic stories, and the story behind songs...which are sometimes stories. I was planning on maybe getting the chance to see him live. Now an official dream of mine. On his Glitter and Doom Tour, he was going to pass through the southern part of our country. If I only payed attention to the date, I would have realized that I was a month too late. I was upset, mad, sad, frusterated. He is musical genius and I don't know when he is going to tour again. I'm guessing by the time I'm officially an adult, I'll probably own his whole collection of albums. I'm already 3 cds in about a month. His trademarks are his voice and fedora. So him. In case you still haven't heard his music. Try it out, you'll find something you will like or in my case love. Imagine Bob Dylan and Tom doing a concert together, their own destint voices mending together on a song--maybe Like a Rolling Stone. Think about the song- it would fit both of their tastes. Maybe Tom can add a cool spin and sound to make it even better. He has played in a few movies, in 'The Outsiders' he played a bartender (completely fits him) and I was excited to see it because it was when Tom was either working on Swordfishtrombones or Rain Dogs. Now the two albums of which I own. He is a genius. Everyone doesn't have to know who he is, and that's a good thing. I don't think he wants everyone to know that. You have to find his music, it's not superexposed. He is truly a diamond in the ruff. When I say ruff, I mean ruff.

???????

An outlaw. A legend. A man highly respected or hated. This man was Jesse James. In the movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford shows this in a thrilling way. I was interested in everything every character had to say, and what it meant to the story. It was like a thriller in a way because you never knew what was next or what someone was going to do. In certain instances, when the camera moves and you are quite shocked to see what is now in front of your eyes. Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck definitely show their amazing talent in front of the screen in this motion picture. You believe them playing the characters. Brad still amazes me with his talent, how every movie that I have seen he's terrific-- acting perfect for the part. Some roles however seem simple or less complex and it seems so easy for him. I didn't know much about Jesse James all I knew he was a 1880's version of Robin Hood. Jesse is known for stealing from the rich, giving to the poor; being the legend he is still known as today. Amazing, you have your eyes glued to the screen wondering what is going to happen next? What is Jesse gonna do? There is an air of mystery in this film that is undeniable, while dying to know if you have right or wrong accusations about what is happening next. This movie has been nominated and won various awards for the acting, cimenatography, musical score and they all truly deserve them. This movie was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I waited a while before seeing this movie, well worth the wait.

Heath Ledger

Friday I watched the E! True Hollywood Story on the guy mentioned above. I had this feeling of wanting to know more about his career, who he was as a person, and see how his acting ability had started. He started young, and soon went on to harder and more challenging roles came to him, and he took the roles to change his identity of the characters Heath would be playing. I like that, you never know what next will come from him, like playing "The Joker" in the new movie The Dark Knight which I'm excited to see because as I watch commercials for it I don't notice Heath, I see the craziness of the character of which he is playing. Heath has this James Dean quality of him, of trying to be the best actor he can be, while being himself at the same time. Also their tragic deaths are a similar situation, both dying young at the top of their game. Sad, but reality that anyone can go tomorrow; the talent they may have shown or not and we must let them live through the work they have done and the latter work done in honor of the person being the one of tribute. He liked to do his work in acting in the film, but not of all the interviews about his private life. That is understandable, doesn't everyone want privacy in their lives? Especially when your private life is on printed pieces of paper for everyone to read. Heath had the chops to make it huge in Hollywood and has. Too bad his life was cut short, but maybe his life touched someone and inspired them. What a great legacy, he had experimenting with who he is and who he will play. He had a gift, and everyone who has seen his work knows that.

The Holiday

The Holiday sounded like a good movie, but as I was watching it I wasn't falling in love with it. Strange a pun about a romantic comedy. Story sounded good, but as I was watching it seemed like one-of-those cheesy romantic comedies where you knew how everything was going to end up. Predictability, can be a good thing, when a writer uses it to make the reader or watcher enthused in the media that the story is made into. The movie didn't have much substance, that quality that makes you keep watching the film. Having an eager and excited look on your face just to see what is going to happen next. Some movies have that, unfortunately do not. I have not seen any of Cameron Diaz's work before but in her character I just didn't believe her playing Amanda Wood, I saw Cameron not Amanda. Kate Winslet and Jack Black have great chemistry in this movie, a good pair, unexpected but great because you would not think of them in a movie together. Jack still is like his normal self in his films-- loud, funny, playing with music in whatever form you give him, and of course silly. Kate did amazing in this film, she was believable. They make a few references to some of my favorite classic movies--Casablanca and The Graduate. I'm glad those are great movies. In the movie there is a trailer for another movie starring James Franco as I think you would know that I am impressed by his talent and enjoy his work. He is the star of an action movie, I so wish that was a real movie. The music in the film is great, but too bad the movie didn't lead up to the expectations.

Here are...The Beatles

I have always loved The Beatles, since I was little. I could write pages on their influence around the world, the legendary artists that were in the band, John Lennon and his peace efforts, song meanings- I never knew there could be so many, conspiracies considering the band, how their songs still translate now, there is so much to talk about. It seems like their music seems to strike a place in my brain where it just gets all happy when I listen to it, it seems to get you in good, happy mood. La-dee-da, La-dee-da. No cares in the world. They wrote about peace, everyday life, yellow submarines, love, anything at all. They made classics for everyone, if you haven't heard of The Beatles you have. They are a fantasic group. The songs are fun to sing-whenever, wherever. Amazing hooks, great British accents. Fun, lively, true characters that you understand. From Prudence, Jude, Lucy, Sadie, Jojo, and many more in the lyrics come to life. They produced music that just sounds right. One can't complain about it, the music is terrific! Well all Beatles lovers' I hope you enjoy my explaination. Now go listen to it!!!!

Across the Universe

Across the Universe is such a cool film for anyone, and everyone who loves Beatles music--done right for the movie. This movie takes place during the early 60's all around the world, showing a lot of the history and current events that happened and how the characters come to life and the songs describe and show the different ways of looking at the songs. The Vietnam War is going on, Detroit riots, the hippie years, the communist revolutionaries, and just musicians trying to make it in New York City. It's a very artistic film, so some things you might have to think about what the scenes are trying to say or express ideas. And there are some things that you might not even want to get. I like that, you don't have to understand everything to enjoy something. Leave stuff to your imagination. It's a wonderful place where everything is wild, crazy, zany, peaceful, anything you'd want. Jim Sturgess is shows off his amazing acting ability, while singing classic Beatles songs and definitely gives them justice. The writers do a great job putting the characters of those songs into real life. This movie is terrific and did deserve the Oscar nomination. One of my favorite musicals--and it's a not so normal one either. Who cares? Normal can get boring. Great movie!!

Tom Waits-my new liking of him.

I've just recently got into Tom Waits. He is who he is also, which as you can tell is a common thread between the people I admire their talent and the people they are. His music tells stories of what he's been through, his not-so-normal life. His music has been here for a while and probably always will be. His music a mix of rock/jazz, has a metal influence, a southern blues singer mentality with life stories as the lyrics. Tom Waits does music well. When I looked him up, I liked two albums right away, and was thinking about a third. Normally if I like the artist, I purchase a cd, listen to it, look up more and decide which of many cds' I prefer to add to a list. In this case, I love three albums. That's so cool to me, I've never really had a liking to an artist and liked so much really quickly. To any Tom Waits fans, I like that you do appreciate his talent, and in if you have not listened to him, give him a chance. He is so worth it. If you don't like it at first, try again. That is what happened to me.

Indie Rock

Indie rock is this new style of rock that is huge--or it should be. Indie rockers have the freedom to do whatever. Anything goes. They can play whatever they want, sing about anything (made-up or real) and you can use that freedom in so many ways. They are allowed to have a wide-open way of thinking because anything goes. You can defy all genres in one song. A song can be jazz, metal, pop, cartoonish, anything you can think of. Indie rockers also can be whatever they want, so they have a wide array of creative expression. When you listen to it, be open-minded like they are. Indie rock can show who the artists really are and can bring anything to it that they want. It's a modern way to listen to a style of music and also very creative. I like that.

IL Postino/The Postman

Il Postino is a wonderfully romantic movie about a shy postman becoming friends with a well- known poet, and eventually falling in love with the most beautiful girl in the city. This is a foreign film made in Italy, and so far all Italian movies I've seen are all good. This movie was beautiful, well- done, amazing. When you are reading the subtitles, you get used to it, and it translates so well to the movie without hardly knowing any Italian at all. It is a great love story, and a story of strong friendship in the wonderful Italy. The movie did well on the awards' circuit too, winning an Academy Award. The story is amazing, the natural scenery is breath-taking, the movie is magnificent. This movie is definitely worth watching more than once.

Why do some of the great actor/actresses/musicians have to die so young?

That is a question that crosses my mind recently. Some of my favorite actor and actresses have died so young that maybe that's why they are legends in any sense. James Dean is one of my favorite actors, he lived fast and died so young. I wasn't even alive in the era of his life, and his ability of acting surpassed his time, and even ours. He was doing what he was supposed to do; I would think everyone who has seen his work would agree. In my own opinion, some actors' films and such are work. Not the sitting in a cubicle type of work- I mean it is a masterpiece, a piece of art the undenyablely everyone is thrilled with...from a film critic to someone who just thought the movie sounded good. They use emotion to their advantage, and think creatively about every scene to portray the character even better, more believeable, bring something new to the character. A genius in a sense. There are few actors that can bring that much to the table. Some actors' have that talent. They should be given the respect that they are due. Some of the greats' have been young, or now they are older. Man, I wish that the new generation of talent can not merely replace the ways of the generation before them, but create their own genius and add something new and interesting to the screen. Not emulate, because the personalities are too hard to replace, and let themselves have the freedom to be themselves, and be appreciative of the ones' that came before them. That is a great way to make yourself known in this world. Appreciate the people before you. Be yourself in the new dawn of the next generation.

The Four Feathers

I've been amazed by Heath Ledger's acting ability. I have only seen two of his movies and am so shocked by his awesome way of translating characters, and yet it seems so simple to him. It was actually his recent death that has lead to my intrigue to see what Heath has done. Heath to me seemed like a pretty-boy, wasn't sure if he had talent to back up all the media he got over the past months. Well, as far as I can see, he does. In this movie, he portrays a British officer in the height of the Victorian era, who must decide to go to war or not; he resigns and by the society of the time, he was thought of as a coward. When he is redeeming himself of his cowardice, Harry discovers who he is and Heath seriously messes with your head and looks like a nomad of the desert. I was amazed by how real he looked. This is an epic. One of courage, loyalty, honor, self-discovery, love--as always, survival, and most of all adventure and adventure of one's self. A terrific story, based upon a novel by E. W. Mason. The director, Shekar Kapur, did the film with great knowledge and used many elements to make the movie what it is. This movie was epic, and all around good.

Jerry Maguire

Such a great movie, I have seen it so many times. It can be considered a sports movie, or a chick flick/romantic comedy. That shouldn't matter. Jerry Maguire is a terrific movie. Well, I don't want to give any part of the movie away, so watch it. My shortest blog.

Neil Young spider?

Well, as the title of this post may surprise you, Neil Young now has a spider named after him. Strange circumstance, being named after a spider. I wonder what he thinks of this achievement, if one may call it that. I was watching "The Colbert Report", so I checked to see if the story was really true. If you catch that variety of spider, cool. But if you don't please realize it is not him that is the spider. He is still singing strong, and he has not reincarnated as a spider that someone named the species after him. Thanks... this was an odd story, it deserves to be written of.

Bob Dylan

I've started reading about Bob Dylan after I became fascinated with his music, and as I always do, I try to find out more about the person-- to see who they really are, why they write what they write, what they believe in or disagree with. I started reading Bob Dylan: Chronicles Volume One written by the only Bob Dylan. With his amazing storytelling skills he tells stories of how he got to be the legend he is today. One will read of his relationships with many fellow amazing musicians, of rock stars to country legends, to agents to his wife. In this book, he seems like he is talking to you, about himself. I'm only half way through the book so far, and loving it. One reason I respect and like Bob Dylan is he is who he is, and no one is going to change that. He says what he feels is right, not what some agent or owner tells him. Bob is a rebel in his own right, but aren't rebels just people who know what they stand for, and also know who they are and aren't afraid to show it. His music is legendary, he has wrote classics for many of us, and has music that will translate and be able to be reflected and revered for many generations. Not all music can do such a thing like that--pretty cool that guy. Keep on listening if you already know who I'm talking about, if you don't look him up.

No Reservations

If you like creating food, the atmosphere of the kitchen in a top-notch restaurant, or if you just like eating food this movie is for you. No Reservations stars Catherine Zeta- Jones, Aaron Eckhart, and Abigail Breslin in this foodie love story between two chefs with very different backgrounds and styles. So of course there is some competition and chemistry with the actors. Though this movie is mainly for the younger aged crowd, it has many adult characteristics to make it all the more wonderful. There are so many plot lines and drama to deal with, that makes the movie so complex, which make it wonderful. The artistry of a chef is included in the film and also the relationships the chef may have with many people they come across from the guests, other chefs, the sellers at a fresh food market. A watcher of the movie would receive a whole new perspective in the the "back of the house" cooking. A charming, funny, romantic movie that a foodie will love.

Cinderella Man

Boxing movies. Awesome. Russell Crowe is the lead role, who plays a boxing legend and how he got there in the Great Depression where fighting was a career to earn money for his family. Through the title, you can tell how he is in the end, but the journey is just as important to the end. Cinderella Man did great in the awards category and truly deserved it. Ron Howard directs, and shows the inspiration he (the boxer) was to the rest of America. As I said before, awesome.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

This movie has many great leading ladies of all walks of life who show their talent magnificently. It's a story about a crazy mother and her friends who she has known most of her life, and they explain to her daughter why she is that way, the experiences she went through. Divine Secrets is also about the mother-- daughter relationship, the best friends that we have in life who know us. This movie made me want to call my best friend and tell her how thankful I have her. I loved this movie. Ya-Ya!!

Finding Neverland

I was glad to watch this movie again, Johnny Depp being a superior actor enforces it. He plays James Barrie, the playwright who created Peter Pan, and how he meets a family and soon they are his inspiration for his plays. Terrific, no matter how old you are.

Shakespeare in Love

This movie is complicated and has many parallels in the Romeo & Juliet story to the real love of Will Shakespeare. It takes you back to that time of old theaters and old English ways of doing things-- except with modern actors. Great story of love, writer's block, a muse, inspiration, obedience (to do or not to do), and duty. Well done, and keeps you watching.

A Knight's Tale

Heath Ledger stars in this movie as "Will", a pheasant boy wanting to change his status in medieval society. It starts out at a jousting match I guess you could call it, where everyone is rocking out to Queen's --"We Will Rock You", awesome stuff. There is plenty of comedy, romance, decision between classes, drama to keep you having fun. And guys in armor poking large sticks at each other on horses to keep you entertained. It's a fun filled story, definitly worth seeing.

Serendipity

Once again, a John Cusack movie... he is now becoming one of my favorite actors. This a chick flick done so well. Its a wonderful story of fate and destiny, if one doesn't believe in it, well I hope you do. The circumstances are funny, spontaneous and random= great. They are witty, and so much fun. It has that predictabality to it, but in a good way. I loved it!

Glitter

Man, this movie was terrible. Glitter is a movie about this orphaned girl becoming the biggest singer in New York--a rag to riches type of story. Wow, it has a few well-known actors in the cast, but their acting isn't up to par. Every time I watch 'Top Chef' I think of Padma playing the top singer in a group-that can't sing. There is so many things wrong with this I don't know what to say. Watch if there is nothing else better, trust me there is.

Say Anything...

This is a classic 80's love story. The movie is terrific, and so well done! John Cusack stars, and he is a normal, sweet, music-loving, kickboxing guy. And the girl of which he is infatuated with is an all A smart type of girl. The love story is amazing and if you get into the movie, you'll be yelling at the television. The famous scene of the movie is where John (Lloyd) is playing their song, putting the boombox over his head, begging her to come out. How romantic?? It is also done by Cameron Crowe, who has done many of my favorite "chick flicks", he knows what he's doing. John is once again playing a music type of guy--but nothing like "High Felidety". Also a great movie for all classic rock type of music lovers. Great, if you don't like 80's movies, well, you should.

The Italian

This is one of the few negative reviews I will give. The Italian is a story of a Russian orphan who learns to read and write despite his caretakers wishes, to find his mother. It takes place in Russia, and is in Russian. As in most Russian literature, it's cold and depressing, as is this movie... but don't have a long face, there is some hope and happiness during the movie. If you don't like subtitles and hearing another language, or foreign films--this is a no. Unless your Russian, this movie you will need subtitles. The reason why I actually decided to get the movie was it was in a few Film Festivals--those movies are terrific and well done and should get more credit I think. And also I thought it was going to take place in beautiful Italy, but you should never assume, all around though a mix between Oliver Twist and Annie, without the musical element. Pretty good.

"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash"

Johnny Cash is a country legend. I'm not a country music liker...I listen to rock. Johnny Cash is not the normal stereotypical country singer...I like that. I just saw "Walk the Line", I learned so much about him. His brother Jack--his death still haunts him, his drunk father who didn't agree with his love of music, his close friend and wife-- June Carter, and his relationships with fellow music people. Johnny is the only country I like, he isn't depressing, not boring, or any other complaints I have of country music. He has lived a life of trials, ups and downs and it reflects in his songs. Here is a conversation between Johnny Johnny:It's all right, it just happened. June C: Just happened? Johnny: Yeah. June: You wear black 'cause you can't find anything else to wear? You found your sound 'cause you can't play no better? You just tried to kiss me because "it just happened?" You should try take credit for something every once in a while, John. Some of his trademarks...if you'd like to see the stories behind some songs, looks, and other trivia about Johnny Cash, I'd suggest seeing "Walk the Line". Great movie!

Tristan + Isolode

Well this movie surprised me, and I like that. The honest reason why I saw it was because one of my new favorite actors is it in and starring. His name would be James Franco. James once again shows his talent in this movie about an old Celtic tale about a couple torn by love, circumstances, and honor and devotion to one's country. There are many sword fights, dramatic scenes, and many great moments that keep you watching. It is not exactly a happy film, but not all movies need to be; after all, this movie is set to be modeled after the epic love tradegy of Romeo and Juliet. James has shown his talent in many of his movies: flying in "Flyboys", boxing in "Annapolis", and acting like his similarly looking American icon of being a rebel-- James Dean. He is very versatile, and terrific actor. Keep going James, I hope too see more of your work.

"All Music is Beautiful"

I was just thinking, while listening to one of my favorite bands - The Jakes, that all music is beautiful. It really is, from genre to genre. Country is beautiful to people, metal is to people, jazz and soul and R&B is for people. The sound of music is so amazing, it can make you cry, laugh, start dancing in the middle of a quiet room, yelling your favorite lyrics, or make you sway, or maybe start a congo line or a round of the chicken dance- of course, depending on the crowd. A simple hook could get your attention and your "hooked" to the music instantaneously. Pretty cool, well I think so. Some of the greatest artists were able to leave a mark on society, or at least they get some thinking, its so cool when you can think of songs in another point of view. They are people who just want to express themselves, I can never say that's a bad thing. It's a terrific thing because you might be feeling the same, or you might be the one expressing. Music can't be invented- composed I guess could work, but just starting to drum with your pencil in a boring class- that is music, despite all the glaring stares it's music. You can't deny it. I love just about all music, or something from a specific genre. Music is a common necessity for everyone of the world, to chants -its ac ca paella, or just a great combo tape, or a new cd- which is never a bad thing. Music is a way of communicating feelings, with words and sounds- doesn't that sound like a miracle. Don't take music for granted.

The Way We Were

I just saw 'The Way We Were'. I honestly didn't know what to think of it, only because I wanted to see it to understand a few references from my favorite show, Gilmore Girls but I found it so wonderful. The movie stars Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford. Streisand plays this communist supporter in the 70's who thinks FDR is one of the greatest men of this world. Redford plays an officer in the US Navy, who doesn't mind making fun of politics- which unfortunately is a serious matter to Katie (Streisand), and thru their lives they see each other over and over, and fall in love once again. This movie is complicated, sweet, dramatic, deals with politics and is a terrific story of a complicated love story that just never worked but in the end they fall in love every time. I cried a few times, and never wanted the movie to end... and the time flew by while I was watching it. Terrific movie!

Flyboys!

You may have seen that movie on the shelf in either a store or a rental place. My suggestion is too see it. The story is of 10 men being some of the first fighter pilots, just after the airplanes were invented...for the French Lafayette Espadrille. It stars James Franco. James is known for being the next James Dean. He can look like him, he has similar presence, but no one can be the new James Dean...just try to emulate him. Well, let's get to the point, he stars and it has many great scenes and they show lots of emotions in the movie- with awesome dogfights!!!!! I don't know why but I love dogfights! It is a story of drama, romance, defeating the Germans, learning how to fly an airplane, and competition, and has a touch of military movie in it. The movie is one of my favorites, when I rented it I watched it twice. Odd for me. That's how good it is. Believe me, its worth watching.

Neil Young

Now I'm finally starting the music part of my blog. Right now I am listening to Neil Young, a folk rock star. He has worked with his band, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young., Crazy Horse, and a few others as time has changed. He is known for many of his controversial songs and some that reflect time in the 60's to 70's. One song, Ohio, is talking about the Kent State Massacres and imagining how the students must feel and is very thought provoking. Southern Man is another that is done and he talks about some of the southern behaviors that our world might not need. He may be a past-druggie (listen to Needle and the Damage Done), but so are some of the other terrific "rebels" of that era. What a great era that was. People rebelled, stood up for what they thought was right, started a revolution that now is coming back. Going Green, World Peace... now maybe people are too afraid to do what they did then because of the government or just insecurity inside of them. Well those protestors have something inside of them, courage and persistance to make this world a better place...We should all applause their strength and persistance to make this world what is it, sometimes not great, but what it is. By rebelling or just speaking up can make this world a more wonderful place to be, and in the end we can respect more people and be a more peaceful place to be.

De-Lovely

I just saw the movie De-Lovely. I thought it was a great movie, it takes you back in time and then back into reality, both well. Let me tell you some background information about this movie: Its a musical about a musical musician famed Cole Porter. He made music and lyrics for many famous musicals- here are some titles of the "hits"- "It's De-lovely", "Your the Top", "What is This Thing Called Love?", "Let's Misbehave", "Night and Day", "Anything Goes" , "Ev'ry Time You Say Goodbye" and many more. He had a interesting and wonderful life. Cole was also bisexual which is unheard of in the 40's. He had a secret love affair and never truly loved his wife, Linda. You see his point of view of his life, while he is watching it right before his eyes. He was smart, clever, funny, sarcastic, confused, throughout his life. In some of his songs that are playing in the background while his life is going by some of our greatest performers are put into costumes and are singing some of his biggest hits. Those performers include Elvis Costello, Natalie Cole, Sheryl Crow, and many others. I say that if a movie can take you back in time, it must be good, and I learned something. I recommend especially if you like Broadway.

Music Movies

some of my fav movies are where music is the main focus. Music can speak louder than words...in a way it kind of is an action. Music can add emotion by how the musician is strumming a guitar, singing, look in their eyes and tell a story by just adding a tune to it. In musicals, or non-conventional musicals like "Once"- one of the best movies ive ever seen. They tell there story thru songs and make the movie all about the movie. More music. Less dialogue. Another fav of mine is "Raise Your Voice", yes it is a younger movie but the creativity is amazing in it. It has romance, struggle of going thru an obstacle of your older brother dying right next to you... August Rush is also one that i adore. It has a quality of singer singing for the music because they love it and its all they know how to do. That is true musical beauty, especially when they are better than some of the top 40 artists. Im a Beatle fan, and Across the Universe is a great movie, they change some of their songs, which normally i hate. but in this case, they made most of it better with Jim Sturgess's great Brit voice and it was great...it was so 60s and 70s i loved it. It takes you back in time. They show you sides of songs that i never thought of. Thought provoking. Across the Universe is a very artisitically done film, some you can tell is computer-generated but you get the point. One scene messes with your head. Just to warn you. RENT is awesome, it has classic Broadway songs and it shows stories of a bohomiemen people living in NYC. Very cool... great stories, there's laughs, tears, and some happy tears... all of the movies i have told you about are all awesome and i highly recommend. If you love good movies and music then check them out, you'll be glad you did. Man, that sounded cliche. oh well, some are true. but most overused.

My favorite movie stars

My favorite movie stars are from the past. They are better, honestly just better. The list includes: Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newmann, Robert Redford, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles, Rock Hudson, Ingrid Bergman, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, Viven Leigh, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood, James Dean, Sal Mineano, Katharine Ross, Dustin Hoffman, Shirley Temple, Eva Marie Saint (On the Waterfront), and that naming a great bunch of them. The are so amazing in their performance, they made classic movies what they are- if people think that black and white movies are boring, then the didn't really watch them. They are filled with romance, action, drama, suspense, and many great qualities. They are the stars that now famed celebrities look up to in style, grace, elegance, demeanor, and being glamorous and fabulous. Just thinking sometimes I wish I was able to turn back time so I may have been there when the movies premiered. That is true in music related things too... I'll get to that later.

James Dean: The Trilogy

I just saw all three of the James Dean movies. All terrific and they definitely showcase his amazing talent to captivate an audience to being a new kid in a new town and all the trouble that can happen in one day, and then being a serve hand in a Texan farm that when his close friend passes he gets a parcel of land that shoots oil and becomes one of the richest men, and also a confused son of a prominent businessman because he is the not the "perfect" son. The perfect son being the "50's" stereotypical Leave It to Beaver son. My personal favorite is Rebel
Without a Cause. He acts it out so well, and convinces you of the role that he is playing- which is my mind the best actor an actor can be, not doing it for the money or fancy cars or most expensive "trendy" things, just because they are good and know it. My second favorite is East of Eden..that role was meant for him.. I've done research and his family life was similar to Cal. It's said that for one scene he took a while to calm down because he went back to when he was with his father...and in that scene he took personally and used it for his best advantage- a genius he is. He is truly a star no matter what people may think. He is an American movie icon of being a boy turning into a man before he really had the chance. James was a rebel on and off the screen, and that's just the way we want it.
